Becoming a Medical Esthetician

A medical esthetician is a certified professional who provides a wide array of skincare treatments, mostly dealing with the dermal and epidermal layers. These individuals are often viewed as a combination of estheticians (non-medical professionals) and dermatologists, since they specifically work with clients to address their various skincare concerns.

In fact, many of the professionals who end up seeking medical aesthetician training are already working in a similar industry, either as an esthetician, a skincare specialist, or a dermatologist. But whatever their background, they are all united in their decision to advance their career by becoming certified in the latest skincare technology and advancements.

It Starts with Medical Esthetician School

As you might expect, the road to becoming a licensed medical aesthetician starts at a specialized school or course. Through these educational institutions, students of all backgrounds will receive comprehensive training in treatments like:

  • Laser wrinkle reduction
  • Laster skin rejuvenation
  • Laser tattoo removal
  • Laser hair removal

However, if you’re looking to become certified in the administration of cosmetic injectables (Botox, dermal fillers), you must already be a licensed medical professional (registered nurse, physician’s assistant, etc.). This is because injecting compounds like Botox and Kybella is very different from providing a normal shot. There are also specifics to learn, such as how Botox affects the facial muscles, the history of the treatment, and proper care before and after the procedure.

That said, even these licensed professionals must still receive medical esthetic training in order to perform laser cosmetic treatments. After all, this equipment is not only state-of-the-art but there are a variety of safety concerns that need to be addressed every time it is used. The point is: regardless of your background, without proper training, it is possible to cause serious injury to clients and patients. That’s why you must attend specialized courses, even if you’re already a doctor!

Preparing for Medical Esthetician School

As mentioned above, becoming a certified medical aesthetician requires mandatory training, regardless of which state you plan to operate in. For starters, most local and state governments mandate that you have a high school diploma or GED before enrolling in a medical esthetic course that certifies you in using cosmetic lasers.

Remember, regulations related to licensing can vary quite a bit from state to state, so it’s very important to look up the current rules and regulations in the area you plan to practice. You should also keep in mind that medical aesthetician schools will all require a set number of hands-on training hours before you can pass a test to earn your certification.
