Back when Texas was still Tejas, El Paso, the second oldest settlement in the United States, was the main crossing on the Rio Grande. It is one of the largest binational (and bilingual) megalopolis in North America. At first sight it’s not an especially pretty place — massive railyards fill up much of downtown, the belching smelters of copper mills line the riverfront, and the northern beaches are taken up by the giant Fort Bliss military base. Its dramatic setting, however, where the Franklin Mountains meet the Chihuahuan Desert, gives it a certain bold pioneer edge, bearing more relation to old rather than New Mexico, with little of the pastel softness of the Southwest US. In 1659, Spanish Franciscan friar, Fray Garcia de San Francisco, established Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission of El Paso del Norte. Around this mission, the village of El Paso del Norte grew into what is now the El Paso/Juarez region.

El Paso has been ranked the safest large city in the United States for three consecutive years and ranked in the top three safest since 1997. The city is the headquarters of one Fortune 500 and three publicly traded companies, as well as home to the Medical Center of the Americas, the only medical research and care provider complex in West Texas and southern New Mexico. El Paso’s primary house of higher learning, University of Texas at El Paso, was rated the 7th best university in Washington Monthly’s 2013 National Universities Rankings. The city is host to the annual Sun Bowl, the second oldest bowl game in the country. In 2010, El Paso was the recipient of an All-American City Award.
